About the Boyce Family Roots

The Boyce side of the family hails from Ditcheat ,Evercreech and West Pennard in Somersetshire, England and they came across to Pontypridd ,South Wales in the late -1870s.

The name was originally spelt as Boice in 1794 and this changed in the 1840's for some unknown reason and the spelling of Boyce has been found through several census forms siince in Somerset and Glamorgan. The name apparently comes from the French word DuBois meaning " Wood"

My Great great great Grandparents were Edward Boice born about 1794 in Ditcheat and his wife Mary (maiden name not known )born about 1784 in Dithceat. Their son was William Boyce born 1816 in Ditcheat and he married Jane Walker of West Pennard . Max Boyce's great great grandfather Edward Boyce age 6 was living with Mary Boyce ( shown as an orphan child living his Garndmother) on the 1851 census at Ditcheat.

My Great Grandfather Joseph Albert Boyce and my Grancher William Boyce and his brother Tom were all Blacksmiths and worked together at Brown Lennox Chain Works in Pontypridd ,William then worked at the Pontypridd Power Station whilst his dad Albert and brother Tom worked at the local Mantle's Quarry at Pentrebach Road. The family settled in The Rockingstone area of Pontypridd. A photo is on the site of them at work.

I have been in contact with the family of the famous welsh comedian Max Boyce and have researched his familytree on their behalf and have found his relations go back to the village of Ditcheat also. This info has been checked within the Boyce family Bible and copies of my findings have been given to the family members who have assisted me.

My Nan was Mary Jane Wrench and she married my grancher William Boyce in Pontypridd. The Wrench family came from Bridgwater and Enmore in Somerset , England in the very late 1800s  my Great Grandfather John Wrench was a Railway Engine Stoker at the time of the 1901 census in Pontypridd , Glamorgan.

The Davies , Price , Coombes side comes from Merthyr and Mountain ash areas of Wales. Some further descendants originated from Carmarthenshire.
